One Halloween cauldron. One mischievous frog. A small solar pump that brought the whole idea to life.
A real garden project by @chirpnook
REAL CREATOR PROJECT · @CHIRPNOOKThe transformation
It started with a giant black cauldron. A shallow dish, smooth stones and a playful skeleton frog turned it into a little recirculating water feature with a character all its own.

From idea to flowing water
Four chapters from chirpnook’s original film. Play a moment to see the details in motion.
01 / Build the base
Chirpnook adds a stable support inside the cauldron, then water. The upper dish will sit above the pump reservoir.
02 / Add the pump
The included tube connects to the pump below the dish. Keep the pump fully submerged and the hose free of kinks.
03 / Make it yours
The tube runs through the decorative frog. The upper dish and stones complete the scene; the return path stays open.
04 / Bring it to life
The panel sits in direct sun. Water flows from the frog to the dish, then returns to the reservoir below.
Make room for the practical bits
The shallow dish and the pump reservoir do different jobs. Plan both before choosing your container.
The upper dish holds the visible water. For birds, Cornell recommends a gentle slope: no deeper than 1 inch at the edges and 2 inches in the center, with stable footing.
The pump stays fully submerged below the dish. Water travels through the hose and spout, then spills back into the cauldron. Leave the return path clear.

A container, shallow dish, stable supports, stones and a suitable spout. Check materials and coatings for the intended water and wildlife use.
Test the connections and return flow. Keep the panel in direct sun, the pump underwater and the parts easy to lift out for cleaning.

The little payoff
Water spills from the frog into the top dish, then returns to the cauldron below. A simple loop, made memorable by imagination.

Good to know before you begin
Sunlight, water depth, materials and everyday care. The details that help an idea work in your garden.
No. The pump uses a separate solar panel. Position the panel in direct sunlight and check the cable reaches your chosen spot.
Stored solar energy can bridge daytime cloud cover while charge lasts. Prolonged weak light can stop the pump. This model does not operate at night.
No. The cauldron, frog, shallow dish and stones are the creator’s own additions. The pump kit includes tubing for a custom water return.
Cornell recommends gently sloping water, no deeper than 1 inch at the edges and 2 inches in the center, with stable places to stand.
The pump must stay fully submerged. In a two-level design, give it a separate reservoir and keep the birds’ accessible water shallow.
Check the connection before buying. The kit includes roughly 5 feet of tubing; flow depends on your layout, height and restrictions. Test the return path.
Choose a stable spot with a clear view around the bath. Shade helps in hot weather; keep the solar panel in direct sun.
No visits are guaranteed. Clean, shallow water may interest local birds, but habitat, disturbance and the location all affect whether they use it.
No. This project does not verify the frog’s materials or coatings. Confirm any decoration is suitable for water exposure and intended wildlife use before adding it.
Yes. Replace the water daily and clean the bath weekly, following wildlife-care guidance. Keep the reservoir, dish and pump accessible; circulation does not replace cleaning.
Check water level and panel sunlight first. Disconnect the pump before cleaning the filter and impeller; refill until the pump is fully underwater before reconnecting.
Allow separate time for sourcing, preparing and securing your decorations. The brand’s 10-minute message concerns kit assembly; this custom project has no verified total build time.
